Lady Roadrunners Get Third-Straight Win With Victory Over Shorter

DALTON, Ga. – The Dalton State women's soccer team got their third-straight win with a 2-1 victory over NCAA Division II member Shorter (Ga.) on Wednesday evening at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex in Dalton.

THE FIRST HALF
Both squads began the match by playing tough defense. It was the Lady Birds who got the first crack on goal when Andrea Soto Calderon took a shot at Lady Hawk goalkeeper Sydney Durham. Unfortunately, the shot traveled wide.

Aisling Cummins went at goal for Shorter in the 19' only to be denied by Mattie Dollar. Izabel Salgado tried to put the Lady Hawks on the board in the 31' but again Dollar came up with the save.

In the 36', Bianca Martins da Silva broke loose and raced down the sideline. As the cut to the middle of the field, she beat a Lady Bird double-team and fired a shot past Dollar for a 1-0 lead.

As the match resumed, Dalton State pressed to get a goal before the half. Shorter ramped up on the defensive end and kept the Lady Roadrunners from advancing ball. With a minute left in the first period Adrianna Arjoon had an opportunity to tie, but her shot went wide as the score remained 1-0 in favor of Shorter at the break.

THE SECOND HALF
Play stagnated in the first part of the second period. Looking to invigorate his team, Coach Alsafeer subbed in a fresh Keyle Snyder in the 62'. Her spark was immediately felt as she went to goal only to miss high. Her intensity was felt as she went to goal again in the 63' but missed wide.

A few minutes later, Snyder pressed again and setup a teammate in the box who drew a foul. The foul sent Arjoon to the top of the box for a penalty kick. She struck the ball low and sent a screamer to the lower right and past Durham to tie the match at 1-1 in the 70'.

The pumped-up Lady Roadrunners kicked up the defensive vigor by not giving the Lady Hawks any space to work. Hard work on the defensive end turned into offensive opportunities for DS as Sarah Chamale took a shot on Durham in the 77' with Shorter netminder collecting the save.

Durham would not be so lucky in the 79' as a defensive stop by the Lady Roadrunners that was created by a foul on the Lady Hawks gave DS a free kick just before midfield. Rocio Carrizales sent a beautiful ball over the Shorter defense to a sprinting Andrea Lopez. Lopez created space from the defender blanketing her and hit the go-ahead goal for a 2-1 lead.

The lead held true over the final 10 minutes of play as Dalton State did not allow another shot by the Lady Hawks and collected the 2-1 win.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (3-2 overall) with the win, while Shorter (Ga.) falls to (1-4 overall) with the loss. Adrianna Arjoon got the first goal of the evening for the Lady Roadrunners on a PK in the 70', while Andrea Lopez scored the game winner in the 79' on a breakaway.

Rocio Carrizales notched the only assist of the evening on the goal scored by Lopez. Mattie Dollar got the win with two saves in net.
Blanca Martins da Silva scored unassisted for Shorter and gave them the halftime lead. Sydney Durham tallied three saves and allowed two goals.
