Lady Birds Win Season Opener

DALTON, Ga. - The Dalton State Lady Roadrunners are 1-0 on the season after a season opening 2-1 victory over NCAA Division II member Shorter (Ga.) University on Wednesday night at Lakeshore Park.

FIRST HALF
The match started with Shorter pressing for an early goal, but would be denied on two occasions by Dalton State goalkeeper Rachel Hardin. Then it was the Lady Roadrunners who turned up the heat. A penalty in the box in the 29th minute led to a goal kick from senior Rosie Lindo that found the back of the net to give Dalton State the 1-0 lead. Shorter would not be down for long as they would press for an equalizer. The chance came in the 32nd minute when Fiorella Gamarra connected on a penalty kick of her own. The two teams would trade possession the rest of the way to go into the half tied at 1-1.

SECOND HALF
The second half started much like the first, but with Dalton State on the attack. Keyle Snyder almost gave the Lady Birds the lead when she missed a shot off the post in the 53rd minute. The two teams would trade possessions for the next 18 minutes until sophomore Adriana Romero made solid contact from the right wing to net the second Dalton State goal of the evening. The defense would hold tight the rest of the way as the Lady Roadrunners would finish off the Hawks and score the season opening victory.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State continues their momentum from the pre-season and improves to 1-0 overall on the young season. Adriana Romero and Rosie Lindo net their first goals of the season, while Rachel Hardin was a defensive stalwart in net for the Lady Roadrunners.
